Happy 6th Anniversary, Project Sekai! Sekai Viewer Reborn Preview Coming Soon

Happy 6th anniversary, Project Sekai Colorful Stage! 🎉

Six years ago, a stage began where Leo/need, MORE MORE JUMP!, Vivid BAD SQUAD, Wonderlands×Showtime, Nightcord at 25:00 and Virtual Singers came together. Since then, the game has given us countless songs, stories, events and memories, and a community that keeps creating, translating, sharing and supporting each other. Thank you to every player who has been part of it, and to everyone who has used, shared or contributed to Sekai Viewer along the way.

Six years is a long time for any game. What makes Project Sekai special to me is not only its music and stories, but the people around it: the players who check every new event, the translators who make stories readable for everyone, the fans who share their art, covers and guides, and the friends who simply keep each other company while grinding for a border. Sekai Viewer exists because of this community, and it only keeps going because of your support.

I want to give special thanks to everyone who has contributed code and filed bug reports. To be honest, I haven't opened the game for a long time. Yet your enthusiasm and support are what have kept me building this website all these years. Every pull request, every issue and every kind word has been a real source of motivation, especially on the days when the to-do list felt endless.

I'm also deeply grateful to our supporters on Patreon. Your sponsorship pays for the servers and services that keep this project running. Without you, Sekai Viewer simply could not have stayed online. Thank you.

Once again, let's WONDERHOI for the 6th anniversary of Project Sekai! 🎂

Progress of Sekai Viewer Reborn

In the previous post, I shared the long-term plan to gradually move from the legacy Sekai Viewer to Sekai Viewer Reborn. Here is where things stand now.

Development has moved a long way since the migration plan was announced. Reborn is now a set of four sites (content, tools, media lab and account), and the content site has grown into a broad game-data browser. Here are the highlights:

  • Content site: cards, characters and units, music, events, gachas, virtual lives, game news, and, more recently, MySekai (furniture, materials and soundtracks) as well as titles, missions and honors catalogues, all with region switching for JP, EN, TW, KR and CN where the data is available. The UI has also been through a round of visual polish and mobile improvements.
  • Tools site: an event tracker with per-region ranking history and snapshots, World Bloom chapter rankings, shareable links and a goal calculator, plus a view to compare current events across regions.
  • Media lab: a story reader with text scripts and a Live2D player, along with a Live2D model viewer. It is still in active development.
  • Sekai Master API: the infrastructure for the future of Sekai Viewer. It is a new backend that provides APIs to query game data directly, so apps no longer have to dig through huge JSON files to find what they need. Master data is now stored in PostgreSQL, synced from multiple regions, cached on the slowest routes, and tuned for performance, which makes queries much faster. We are also considering opening it up for public access, so that other community projects can build on it too.

Account features are still at an early stage, and not everything from the current Sekai Viewer has been brought over yet. The migration will stay gradual, as planned.

Reborn is built on the ideas I described when the project was first announced: smaller, lighter server-side rendered applications instead of one huge single-page app. The practical benefits are:

  • Faster pages that are easier to load and easier to keep fast as the site grows.
  • Shareable links that show a correct preview on social media, and pages that search engines can actually see.
  • A maintainable foundation, so individual pages and tools can be improved one at a time instead of waiting for one very large update.

The preview is coming soon

The biggest news: a public preview of Sekai Viewer Reborn will be available soon.

To be clear about what to expect: it is a preview. Some things will be rough, some features from the current Sekai Viewer will not be there yet, and you may run into bugs. That is exactly why we want you to try it. Your feedback will help decide what gets polished and what gets built next.

I'm not announcing an exact date today, because I would rather release it when it is ready than rush it out. When it is live, I will announce it here and on @SekaiViewer with the link and instructions on how to send feedback.

In the meantime, the current Sekai Viewer stays available as usual. You do not need to change anything.

Want to help?

Reborn is still a community project built in limited time, and help is always welcome. Whether you can contribute on the technical side, or with web design, translation or user stories, please feel free to contact @SekaiViewer or write an email to dev@sekai.best.

Thank you for six wonderful years of Project Sekai, and for being part of Sekai Viewer. Here's to many more!
